Nubby Knitting Update

Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts concerning my headaches! I am being more vigilant in keeping them at bay and have been reasonably successful. Some evenings when I get home, if I’ve had to spend most of the day on the computer, I just don’t get Archie out of his bag, and then I keep off the computer at home. That helps but limits blogging. I also figured out that although M can have a cocktail and then a glass of wine with dinner, I cannot; I can’t mix different types of alcohols. I mentioned this to my mother, who reads the blog and asked about the headaches, and she said most people were like me, not like M (something he was very pleased about). Apparently, there is a saying about not mixing the “grape with the grain.” Also, apparently, I was already supposed to know that. *sigh*

Anyway, with less time on the computer, I’ve been knitting away on my Nubby Cardigan. I’ve finished the back (Yes, it does need a wee bit o’ vicious blocking!).

And I’m to the raglan decreases on a sleeve:

When I first posted about this cardi (in March!) I wrote about how I had been inspired by the designer Deborah Newton ever since I was a newbie knitter. The next day, Deborah Newton had left a comment on my blog! I was surprised and ecstatic. I told M, and he was happy for me, but he had to add, “You better do a good job on the sweater.” (He likes to think of himself as Evil Incarnate. *sigh*) So far, I don’t think I’ve screwed up on the sweater, and I’m enjoying the knitting. I’d like to get as many pieces of it done as I can this summer. As the collar is the last thing knit, and it is ginormous (10 inches wide), I will have to knit it when having a big, wool sweater in my lap won’t cause heat stroke.

I have no idea what sort of buttons to consider. I need 4 1-3/8-inch buttons. The yarn is so very periwinkle. I don’t know if I should try to match the periwinkle or go with something pewter? Maybe a dark wood button? I love buttons, but buttons are hard to come by in my neck of the woods. Any thoughts?

Well, it’s time to peruse the bags and baskets of WIPs, pick one up and add some rows/rounds. Happy Knitting!

  • I’m not sure I’d have known that phrase, either, but since I can only have one drink a week for medical reasons, it’s merlot every time. Makes things a bit easier, ya know?

The color of your sweater would probably be hard to match, I’d go for wood or metal – and why not search the web?
    (((hugs)))

  • Gosh, the things our mothers should have taught us but didn’t!

The only thing I ever heard was in college: Beer before liquor, never sicker. Liquor before beer, you’re in the clear.

But I think that’s just because if you’re already buzzed on beer, you’ll drink too much liquor. Whereas if you switch from liquor to beer, it’s just hard to get too smashed on beer because there is so much volume!

  • Oh, mixing alcohol kills me. So does wine of any sort – that one started out as first tannic reds (pinot noir was still ok), then pinot noir, then white. Also, I need to drink at least as much (preferably more) water as alcohol.

  • I can NOT mix alcohol either! And alcohol with a sweet mix is also a no-no. Although, I had a “Blanco Sangria” the other day, and it was divine. And no ill effects either…

I think pewter would look lovely on the cardigan. Unless you can find a darker shade of periwinkle (a colour I LOVE, great choice!).

  • There’s that saying – beer before liquor, never been sicker; liquor before beer, never fear. But I don’t drink enough anymore to know if that saying actually holds true, and when I did drink that much (college and after), I was too drunk to remember which one I started with. 😉

I’m a fan of wood buttons. Have you tried etsy? GREAT button finds there!

  • I would go with wood or pewter. I think either would look nice. Wood would give it a more casual feel and pewter would be more dressy. In my experience attempting to match periwinkle is a maddening process and should be avoided at all costs. It is a beautiful but elusive color and should be left to shine on its own.

  • I think pewter buttons would look nice too. There! Lots of opinions to shop. 😉

I had to give up alcohol for caffeine when I started getting migraines. (My neurologist wanted me to give up both but I’m only human!)
